HATFIELDS AND MCCOYS

I'm LOVING it! We had been traveling down to WV for a few years to visit my BIL who was acting in a troupe at Theater West Virginia. They put on a play every year about the Hatfields and McCoys. Very good for what it is, performed at night in an outdoor theater, under the stars and surrounded by the mountain forests at the gorge, beautiful surroundings and a strange mix of amateurs and professionals acting out a piece of the local history. Quite the experience. As for the History Channel version... So far I am impressed with the "show" which is more like a six hour movie. Costner is doing very well, though I am not normally a fan of his. As for it being slow... yeah, but the feud spanned many years so if you think about the historical aspect and the depth that the movie goes into, it's justifiable IMHO. But I love history so I'm biased and would rather see more than less. The gore, yes but it's not excessive given the time period, the situation or done purely for the gross-out factor as many programs do. Perhaps it's not for everyone but I appreciate the gritty realism over a candy-coating any day. Lots of chickens running around in that movie though!

I know, there are lots of chickens.Did you see the run fence that was made of some kind of vine-weaving?Giving me ideas about a kudzu-weave-vine-fence. hmmmm

I did see that! It was really neat but not sure how it would really serve to keep them in. Would be a great use for kudzu though, for sure.

Having spent some time in that exact area (Pikeville/West Virginia), and being familiar with the place and surnames of the area, I am really enjoying the program. Usually I don't care for Kevin Costner, but he's doing a good job. Also, some actors have better accents then others, but I guess if it was too authentic it might be hard for audiences to understand.

I've watched it (I'm a CW reenactor) and the first part was kinda ho hum, jumping all over the place of events unfolding. I lost track of the story a bit here and there. Part 2 was pretty good, with a bit more violence but who says war is somewhere you can play nice? NOT! Its the reality back then when they get into a fued between two families.

Kevin Costner did a good job acting but there were not much aggressiveness on his part to play the "bad guy". Too many actors on there yanking on the horses' mouth particuarly one guy's black bay horse, his mouth just gaping open all the time. I wanted to smack that actor down to the ground for see sawing the horse's mouth.

For those who don't like violence, bloody fights, deaths, beatings....don't watch it. It is like a like a soft core cowboy movie unlike Charles Bronson's killing sprees which those are hard core murder movies.

I swear the Hatfield and McCoys have some OCDs on boundary issues and can't play fair or agree on terms to repay the mistake rther than killing.

Here is a bit of history for those who can not keep up with the fast pace event of the movies: http://www.ghat.com/lugar1.htm
