Have new Little Giant can't get humidty right!!!! HELP

I have the Acurite Humidity Monitor from Wal-Mart and I just placed it in the bag with the salt in the bottle cap with the drops of water and almost imediately (sp??) the humidity went from 40% to 48% and now only about 3 min later it is at 53%.

If it reaches 75% before the whole 24 hour period is over, am I okay to put it back in the bator??

help! tonite some of my eggs is on the 18 day but the others aint soooo im putting them in a brooder soon, but as they are right now my temp in my incubator is spiking to 103f is it cause the ones that are getting ready to hatch? cause their heat be making my bator spike?

now that my eggs have hatched and i've cleaned and sanitized my lg still air i'm ready to re-load the bator...I have a mixture of 18 eggs coming in this week, Black Copper Marans and Ameracauna...decided to put in one of those pc fans from an old comp we had laying around - my husband did it for me and i've had the bator running since last night with the fan in and my humidity has been holding as well as the temp without all the little extras I had to do...pretty sure there will be some adjustment i'll need to do once i put the eggs in, but for now the fan seems to be helping...my husband just put the fan angled in a corner but not sure if the air should be blowing on the eggs like that...gotta do some searching on that one...

Do you mean hatcher? I hope so, because a brooder is for after the chicks hatch and have dried off for a day or so in the incubator or hatcher.

I have never heard of day 18 eggs making the temp spike to 103, but I have heard of LG still air incubators spiking to 103 just because....

I keep my humidity at about 35-45% with the use of wet o'cello sponges from the dollar store. Have had good hatch rates -- better than 50% in the LG. Mine has the built-in fan, tho. I love that thing.

During incubation, I cover every other vent hole in the top with scotch tape. DH figured this out about half-way through the first incubation when we had trouble with the humidity, as well. We got the wet sponge idea from here on BYC, as well.

The verdict is in !!!! My hygrometer does NOT work !!! YEAH!
Thanks everybody for you help after the full 48 hrs the thing only said 20% humnidity (which is exactly what is was saying in my bator)
I'm sort of excited because now I know my bator isn't broken I only need to get a new hygrometer.
Can't wait to test it and get it going!

Who would have thought anyone could be so happy about their hygrometer NOT working!!! Glad to hear it's not your bator - time to get hatching!!!

Take a look at the dry incubation cheat sheet on my BYC page- what many experienced hatchers will tell you is that the humidity can't be too low for the first 18 days, and that the problems and low hatch rates occur when the humidity is too high.

Best of luck!

Got a new hygrometer and tested it . Humidity only got to a high of 72% briefly but most of the time read 69% after 48 hrs. I guess it's safe to say it is about 6% off??

calibrating your hygrometer is simple salt test that i had to do
its the humidity thingy by the way

get a zip lock bag
a bottle of water
table salt
and your hygrometer
take the top off the bottle of water
fill about 3/4 of salt in lid
then ad a couple droppes of water to the salt just to soak up the salt
then you put lid with salt and your hygrometer in ziplock bag (keep flat)
be sure to leave some air in it while your closing it up
keep it sealed for 24 to 48 hours
and inside the bag its 75%humid
so open the bag up read your thingy and if it dont say 75% humid then there should be on back to turn yours to 75% humid then your good to go
hope this helps

What if my hydrometer doesn't have any adjustments on the back do i just have to keep up with how bad off it is? i have a acu-rite one and a Fluckers one
