have you ever broken your finger??

I broke my ring finger in H.S. gym class, it really swelled up, I had to work fast to get my ring off. Dr put it in a cast! So cute. But that's not a good idea, when the swelling started to go down, the cast popped off. I just wrapped it alongside my other finger til it was completely healed, about 3 weeks. Hope you don't have any problems with it.

Do I win because I have broken a finger AND a toe? And both wrists, and a bone in my elbow joint..........

Anyways, when I broke my finger it was a freak accident involving a horse who tried to bolt and the lead rope pulling in just the wrong angle. Whoops, broken and dislocated ring finger. I just straightened it out, made sure it still bent properly and that I could feel everything and then finished what I was doing. I later iced it and then put one of those little finger splints on it, and also taped to a neighboring finger. It got REALLY UGLY for a couple days, but has healed just fine.

also, when I broke my toe (kicking a fence to stop a dogfight) yeaaaaaaaaaaars ago, I went to the doctor. He shrugged it off as just bruising but xrayed just in case. It WAS broken, but there was nothing they could do for it. It healed okay, although is still bigger than it used to be and does not bend well. They offered to re-xray it in case it had healed wrong....so they could rebreak it and reset it. HA, no thanks. It works just fine the way it is.

I broke my pinkie finger in the same place about 2 years ago. There isn't much that can be done, if you go to Happy Harry's they have finger splints. Get yourself one of those and some tape. Just tape it at the bottom and the top, not too tight. Keep your finger in there for a while. I took mine off too early, DR said that it would heal crooked if I didn't leave it in there long enough...well I didn't listen and she was right. Now I have a crooked pinkie finger and here 2 years later, it still hurts now and again.

I haven't read the other replies so I may be repeating what you have already been told. I broke mine about 3 years ago. The doctor gave me a metal splint that bends enough to put your finger in it. You just tape it on with medical tape. My daughter hurt her thumb not long after and I bought a similar splint for her at a local pharmacy. So you do not HAVE to go to the doctor. The splint did help a lot with the pain because it helped hold my finger still and padded it against the pain of bumping it on something.

One problem the doctor did help me with was blood under my fingernail. It was badly swollen, black, and painful. He drilled a hole in my fingernail and drained out some of the blood which gave me almost instant relief. If you have anything like this, the doctor can help.

I broke my finger playing softball about 2 months ago. sat hours in the ER for a splint. SOOOO not worth it. I also damaged some nerves as someone else said, but since it was the part closest to the end of my finger they said theres not much vascularly they can do about it anyway. It healed in about 5 weeks, except now I can tell where my nail bed was growing when I broke it because the lack of nerve function has my nail growing in white from that point on back, and at the time I couldnt feel the entire end of my finger, not I still cant feel the very end of it but it's not affecting how I do anything so it's fine with me. dr says it probably will always be that way.
