my 5 CT hens will be 2 years old in May. They ALL stopped laying in late September this year and i have had ZERO eggs from anyone since than! until yesterday! I cant believe it! I know it was a fluke tho. It was a really nice egg that Delicious delivered without issue. I look forward to the spring to see if they start laying again. They all molted for the first time ever and I think they are all just about done, looking all beautiful, shiny and fresh. i had 2 hens squat for me this past week which I havnt seen since the summer. The winter here in CT is a bit on the warm side so we're all mixed up. I even took some of their run wrap off, valuing more fresh air exchange over blocking it because its just not that winter-y out there. when they hadnt laid in a month, i starting adding 20% protein chick started to their 16% layer feed. I too had no idea that hens can go so long without laying and now understand the term 'chicken math". Because of this, I will anticipate getting more chicks in the spring which means making an entire new chicken coop i guess. I hope! If not I'll be searching for $5 farm fresh eggs somewhere around here. In the meantime, my freeloaders can continue to help me with yard work as their payment.
