My Ancona has found a way to prise open the compost bin both the lid and the slats on the side. Not only that, but once a rat had made a nest in there and she dug it out and ate all the little pinkies....not that i was complaining, was just a little....gross

I'm always amazed by the people that think chickens are herbivores. Tell you what, there isn't a single mouse in my hen house.I

I recently watched by little Wyandotte, Opal, running as fast as her little legs would take her with the rest of the flock in hot pursuit. When she escaped to the top of our retaining wall, I saw that she had a juicy lizard in her beak. Down the hatch. RIP little lizard.

All 89 of my girls will wait outside there coop to go in if the door shuts and will come to the back porch and will call until someone comes out to let them in there coop... they also follow us around some will come in the house if we leave the door open.

i had a buff brahma hen named buffy she was very very calm and friendly she would say her name either buff buff or buffy or buff buff girl i would put her in my brief case and sneak her in my room but on march 25th 2012 she was perching on the armrest on one of those plastic chairs well she lost her balance and fell back and broke her neck

i made her a cross and got smooth stones and put those on her grave along with flowers and thats buffy's story.

I have a barred rock pullet named Oreo who is ALWAYS the first one there for food. When we eat outside she know that when she can now longer hear the silver ware against the plate it is time for food scraps. She comes to the table and does her chicken begging. She will also keep an eye on what is being tossed out and quickly abandon whatever she has if something better appears. Interestingly, she is also the biggest.

I have one we have named Hudini since she seems to have found a way out of a locked fenced in run each morning to get all the good bugs before the rest of my flock (34 total) are let out to free range each day... You would have thought that sooner or later some of the others would be as adventurous as she is and follow but they just sit there and watch and wonder why she gets to get out before they do. The rest do know where the gate is and will sit there waiting till I let them out in the morning.

My Penny once ran up to my 14 pound cat and snatched a mouse right out of his mouth before he even saw her coming. LOL

They probably know its the gate because that is where you come in and go out of to get to them, Im assuming... Kind of like how chickens USUALLY never seem to wander off of your property. They know where you wander and so they usually don't go any farther than they remember you going. So they do have a memory, but they aren't as smart as you think

Yes i have a very smart chicken out of the 5 of them only she knows how to get out i had 6 but my cat got to one so i double fenced it and she got out again she can fly high she flew over the fence and got scared when she realizied she was away from the flock.That's like my youngest got stuck under the porch .
