I'm very sorry for your loss. He was beautiful.

It hasn't happened to any of my chickens (yet). But, my neighbor had a 3 month old pullet who was free-ranging one day with the rest of her flock. The pullet suddenly flew across the yard, smacked into the 5 ft. high solid wood fence gate, and broke her neck. It was bizarre.

I'm really sorry about your roo, he was very pretty! I've never had that happen but one evening when I went out to feed the horse and close up the coop I found my beautiful brahma roo floating in the horse's water tank. He had flown up in the air and landed in the tank and drowned. I feel your pain.

I'm another of the ones who's sorry you lost him and thinks he was beautiful. He sounds like a really good roo, too. But it wasn't your fault at all, and it wasn't dumb. Maybe something startled him, or he was trying to protect one of his girls from something? I hope you find another roo as good as he was.

I am sorry--- I know how hard that is. Just a month or so ago I had a similar thing happen. One of my Cornish pullets--- went to the coop in the morning and found her lying under the roost--- made me so sad--- she was fine the night before when I locked everything up. She looked perfect--- she was just dead. We kind of figured she broke her neck somehow...

Sorry for the loss. I found one of my hens dead once, looked like she stuck her head through a garden rake that was leanning against the fence and somehow she snapped her neck. Not long ago, I was buliding a coop and I had a sheet of plywood leaning against my quad, I stepped away to get a drink and when I came back the plywood had fallen over onto a young cockerel.

Accidents happens in the animal world too. It sucks.
