Have you ever hypnotized your chicken?

I would never hold one upside down, I don't think it's right. But what the other poster said about laying her neck and head down and having her focus on your finger......that made sense. As a matter of fact I saw a movie with Clark Cable in it -can't think of the name of it - where he actually did that to a chook and you saw it happen! Very interesting! Now I have to look it up..............

Sorry chickensduck that your chicken did not make it.......could have been a whole different thing going on with her. So sorry.

chickensducks&agoose :

I held one of my chickens upside down for a minute, trying to inspect some messed up wing feathers, and then it DIED. I put it on the ground, and it went into spasms/siezures, and DIED. It was horrible.

Gosh thats the last time I put one of my girls upside down. I am so glad that you posted that.

I just tried to do this...Annie got very relaxed then suddenly she gave a big squawk and turned around and looked at me. So it didnt work, but thats probably just me.

I've tried hypnotizing one of our Red Star hens; it worked! I slowly placed Abby, one of the hens, on the ground and stroked her neck, then I slowly walked away from her and she just laid there. Then our RIR rooster came over and started stepping on her and she got up.

I think he thinks that when we do this to one of the hens, they're dead because they actually do look dead when they are just laying there. So he comes over and starts clucking at them and stepping on them to wake them up. Silly rooster.

Back in high school I remember the Ag teacher and a vet yelling at students to stop "hypnotizing" their chickens. They were using the "hold them upside down" and "spin around with them" methods. The vet said that they were not hypnotized. They were going into shock.

Putting a chicken upside down makes it hard for them to breathe. One of my chickens got her foot caught and was hanging upside down, barely conscious when I found her. I screamed, freed her, and she "came to" in my arms. She was much more trusting of me after I rescued her.

I sometimes hold her in my lap and stroke her crop while she closes her eyes and "blisses out". Does that count?

I only held mine upside down because I was trying to get a good look at her 'armpit'... I'd found some blood on the shavings, and was thoroughly inspecting each bird. She was a serious flapper, and I managed to get her on her back, and she DIED... it turned out that the blood was from the comb of another hen... now I touch my birds as little as possible, it seems that any intervention is usually worse for the bird than no intervention at all...

I have, however its best not to leave them there too long, because they can die.

Lay chicken on its side, and draw a few quick line in the ground (best on mud, and done quickly). Gently let the chicken go, and it will stay there for a little while, make a louad clap with your hands and she jumps up and runs away

What I learned to do is
1. Catch the chicken
2. Flip it over on it's back in your lap...G E N T L Y.
3. Support it's head with one hand
4. Stroke it's stomach or breast and it gets hypnotized
5. Make a loud noise and it flips over really fast and runs away at the speed of light.

Another thing (it doesn't last as long) is this:
1. Run up to a calm chicken really fast and make noises
2. If it runs away, it wont work, but it should shake it's head, stamp it's feet, and cover its head with its wings partly.
