Mine get those, esp the younger ones from the other birds stepping on each other. Your bird was most likely minding it's own business and another one stepped on his feet or it faught with another bird. Nails can do damage. Just do not leave it on too long cause fresh air will help it heal better, if wrapped to tight air cannot circulate around the cut and/or legs. Great wrap job!
