Thats cool. Someone had some of these for free on CL i may have to get a few and try it out...

That's a pretty cool idea. I was thinking of having a friend weld me some decorative bean trellises but i havent decided for sure yet.

Hey on your potato mound, how exactly do you do it .. Just start them all together then cover again after they sprout high enough.. I have never done potatoes but have a ton that friends have sent.. and keep getting conflicting advice on the net...

Our old Potato mound was just a huge pile that we would toss (veggie)scraps on & When we would cut potatoes up we would re-bury all the parts that had 'eyes' on them(the growing part) we always had potatoes. It was pretty simple and even in the cold parts of the year we'd have potatoes, just have to dig a little farther, lol.

Like a big compost potato pile...probably part of the reason we got some pretty big ones, lol.

ETA: i don't remember exactly how gramma started it but it always had plants on the top and it was probably about 3' high in the middle..probably about 6'-8' wide.

What are those? I am thinking of a thousand and one uses in this constantly churning brain of mine...I wish it would quit.
I bet they would be perfect trellis' for mums and asters. Stacked, they be perfect for peas... humm.

The garden has been in... in pots in the greenhouses. I had tomatoes, bib lettuce, green onions and egg salad for lunch today. Don't be envious, because in three more weeks it will be too hot for anything for us...and the lettuce is already bolting. But I keep trying anyway. last year the only thing that I had over the summer was peppers and eggplant. We got really tired of peppers and egg plant. really, really, tired.

I am so ready to get in the dirt! I did my garlic last week, when the ground was still a little cool. they have sprouted and hopefully will be ready to pick around september. my onions from last year finally took lol, and they are growing great! so we will have to till around them. I did however pull a few of the weed mounds from the garden, that are thriving because of the coop shavings we dumped in there over the winter. and my girls got a nice afternoon snack yesterday considering they don't have any green in the run or within neck's length around it. but a great discovery was tons of worms!! in the garden that is! they are loving and composting all those shavings for me! where there's worms, there's healthy soil!

I managed to forget to transplant some wild blackberries to an actual bed....so that will have to wait until fall I guess. my herb garden is starting to perk up, my sage has clumps of bright green new leaves and smells wonderful. but my thyme just looks dead still. no leaves no nothin. I may have to replace it, but put it in a hanging basket for better drainage (I think the roots were staying too wet). and my rosemary is perking up too. I bought and planted my first rose bush, and it seems to have taken well; lots of new leaves and nice great stems. I pollinated the peach tree flowers myself this year to see if I get better numbers. it is still pretty small, but I am going to baby that thing, and hopefully get enough to make something from them lol.

I want to plant this year:
lots of corn
cukes, of course
tomatoes (I think I want some heirlooms this year for a good variety)
green beans, gonna try again with them, and pick them earlier than I did last year
pumkins, even if they don't get big enough to carve or cook, the chickens will love them!
I know it's a little late, but I might do a hanging basket or two of strawberries, just to test out my own
and per DH's request, Jalapenos again this year, they did great last year. even had enough to pickle
we're going to also try some potatoes, my dad did them last year, and said they couldn't have been easier
I think that's pretty much it. I not going to venture too much out of the norm this year, because last year was such a bust, because of the deer and racoon damage...I ended up pretty much giving up....but not this year!!

We also have some fruit trees (one that we have to replace due to black rot

) and a couple berry bushes that are very small still. My youngest son had me buy some sunflower seeds the other day as he wants to try growing them this year.

I guess I am lucky, the only garden predator I have is the dogs, lol. Our current rescue girl LOVES to dig. The Raccoons have kind of disappeared because fo the dogs i think.

the mole hills are all getting Juicy Fruit'ed before I plant everything.
