I can't begin to fathom a circumstance with your chickens in which you would require the assistance of your dog. I'd work on having him leave the chickens alone at all times.

I thought that the hens might need help finding their way back to the coop. We live on the top of a hill with woods all around. If they travel downhill. Will they find their way back in the evening?

Your hens will need no help. They will easily find their way home. As long as your coop is dry, secure and well ventilated with good roosting, they will always come home to roost.
