Having trouble buying chicks

if I were going to get "enough" I would just order direct from the hatchery...that is where the feed stores buy them and that way you skip the middle man...less $, quicker for the chicks, less handling, less stress on the chicks...

I say order from the hatchery direct!!!

Thanks everyone!
I would have no qualms about ordering directly from the hatchery, except that I only want 6! I also can't get them from people who so nicely offer me some of theirs, as I only want pullets! I think their is a website called 'My Pet Chicken' that would let me order 6 chicks. Thanks, everyone, for your input! (This was my first time posting a question on the BYC forum)

Hi and welcome. Yes you can order a small amount from My Pet Chicken. It really depends how far you live from Boston time wise. I ordered 8 (I'm an hour away) 4 chickens and 4 batams, all pullets (I hope lol). They were very good and arrived the day after they shipped. There is quite a delay right now though, I had to wait around 2 months for my order to be available. Good luck.

The feed store near me has had them all spring, but allot of folks are struggling to get them from the hatcheries. I think the problem is with the hatcheries as the poultry auction have a ton of chicks this spring.

She can also ask my pet chicken if they can deliver the chicks to the Providence post office if that is closer than Boston. I know she mentioned she lived on the Rhode Island/ Mass border, and Providence may be closer. My pet chicken is located in Connecticut so they are probably familar with the new england area a little bit.

It seems that chickens are really popular now! I think it is a combination of people wanting to "go green" and raise them for sustainability, the effects of the recession, or for people like me who have wanted them for awhile and have finally taken the plunge.

I had to arrive extra early at our local feed store to get my girls. There was a large group of folks like me who were waiting when them opened to pick out their chicks on the day the shipment arrived. Virtually all the pullet chicks were gone that first day. The feed store owner says its been that way all spring.

Here's a real stretch, but I just got in contact with a woman in Milford, CT who has chicks for sale--they are due to arrive on Monday the 11th.

I found her in the New Haven section of Craig's List--she and a friend went in on an order from McMurray's and the friend backed out. Now she needs to find homes for 10 female, brown egg-layers, vaccinated for Marek's.

Look under "farm and garden" and search for "chicks."

Milford would be a drive, but if you really want the chicks...

I ordered 25 brown egg layers pullets from Murray McMurray the other night. I ordered White Orpington's, Buff Orpington's, Black Australorps, RIR's, New Hampshire Reds, Speckled Sussex and Partridge Rocks. The only downside to ordering from a hatchery is that you need to get a minimum of 25. I have seen lots of chicks for sale on Craigslist but I wanted to get mine vaccinated for Mareks. I had good luck with McMurray's in the past so I'm looking forward to my shipment which is coming on the weekend of june 1st

OH MY GOSH!
I asked my husband to stop by the feed store that doesn't answer the phone to ask them when they are getting the chicks in that he told me about last week. My husband came home with 4 "days old" chicks. He saw my DH coming; they already have real feathers on their wings, and one has some kind of teeny tiny tail featers (but they dont look like real feathers) on their behinds. How old does that sound? They are also supposed to be Rhode Island Reds. AND they were not vaccinated, as these are chicks he bred himself. He also claims they are all female. I doubt it, because he told my husband to just bring them back if they turn out to be roosters. YIKES!

Thanks to everyone, (I probably could have gone to CT on Monday.)
