I have looked at the pictures at the top thread & they seem so obvious, but I keep second guessing myself in sexing my own coturnix & A&Ms. Are there some colors that are impossible to sex other than listening for crowing? I thought it was my hens getting bloody heads from being mounted too much, but I saw an A&M with a bloody head mounting another A&M with a bloody head. I was trying to reduce males b/c I thought there was too high a roo:hen ratio & that is why there are some bloody heads. Ack! Any advice for a newbie?

the most reliable way would be to pick each bird up and check its vent for "the white stuff". then you can tag each male with a ring around its leg

So if the hens are old enough to lay I should be able to squeeze the vent & find white stuff? I think I may have released a female tonight then:( I thought the chest looked yellowish... there were some black stripey spots, but not round.

So checking the head for wear isn't reliable and mounting isn't reliable?

Except for the A&M, obviously, being a pure white bird. Those you need to vent sex.

Some of the bloody heads could be because there are too many males, and the more dominant males are picking on the less dominant ones.

i had a male once that was totally sclped and one of his eyes was pecked at. it wasnt too pretty. but yes you are right, the a&m require vent or crow sexing

Anyone want to look at pictures to help me?

Ok Lets Give It A Whirl.....

A. Roo
B. Cant Tell In This Pic
C. Cant Tell In This Pic
D. Tibetan Cannot Be Sexed By Coloration
E. Tuxedo Cannot Be Sexed By Coloration
F. Hen

The A&m, Tibetans, Tuxedos Must Be Vent Sexed As You Cannot Tell By Coloration In Most Cases...... As Far As Goldens And Browns The Male Will Have A Rusty Color On The Chest, The Females Will Be Spotted Without Rust On Chest. So If We Can Get A Full Frontal View Of B & C I May Be Able To Tell You On Them.

Almost right on that last part, the males will have rust colored chests, but the females can have rust coloring as well. The key difference is that the females breasts are spotted, and the males are solid colored.

My guesses are:

A-roo
B-looks like a hen but I am not sure (too far away)
C-also looks like a hen, but need a better front pic
D-rosetta--can't tell by looks
E-rosetta tuxedo--can't tell by looks
F-looks like a hen

I would move the A&Ms out of that pen asap, before they end up getting killed.

ETA: The only colors that can be color-sexed are browns, goldens, and cinnamons. All the rest need to be vent sexed.
