Aloha BYC! We are the Conradt ohana from the big island if Hawaii! We just recently acquired 13 buff Orpington chicks from a local hatchery on Oahu, Asagi hatchery. So far the chicks are about a week old and are doing awesome. They all have their own personalities and craziness about them. My 2 daughters along with my wife baby sit them during the day and constantly are updating me on the new and weird things they do. We researched a lot on the different breeds that would meet our needs and also become more than just a source of food but an awesome pet as well. We love our animals, we have a golden retriever, 2cats, and a big white rabbit. They are all very friendly and a big part of the family so when we discovered that the buffs were the golden retriever of the chicken world, that was the deal breaker. We had to have them! I have lots of experience raising chickens. I've had them since I was in middle school. I always had leghorns for eggs and they are awesome as well. My wife hated them and swore that when my aunt took them over we'd never get chickens again! Lol! Until I showed her the Buff Orpington that is! I will try to update with pics of the chicks and also their developement weekly! Thanks for reading! Mahalo nui loa!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with the new chicks! Orpingtons are a wonderful breed and make good pets, can see why they won your family over.

Welcome to BYC!

Yes, the Buff Orpingtons are a great bird to keep! So docile, friendly and affectionate. Great layers too!

Well, pull up a roost bar and enjoy all your adventures in life and here on BYC!

Your daughter is adorable and the chicks are pretty cute too. Aw Hawaii - my brother has been to Hawaii - various islands several times. Ever since he only wants to drink Kona coffee and his favorite nuts are macadamias .

The closest I've ever come is my IZ CD and an IZ t-shirt, what a beautiful voice & man that was silenced way too soon.

HELP! 3wks old now and all they wanna do is run around pecking and fighting eachother! Haha! I'm not sure what I should do with them. Maybe the cage is to small? Maybe they should go outside already? I mean we do live in Hawaii it doesn't even get down to 40 degrees at night where we live. Any advice would be greatly appreciated... Mahalo!

Yes, they are way too crowded in there and they will start fighting. I would try getting them out into the coop during the day, and bring that back in at night to sleep. They are a bit young yet to stay out with the cooler night time temps. But at least if they spend the day outside, they will have more room, get more pooped out and sleep well with each other in this smaller space. But I would say by one month old, you can get them out to the coop for good. You can use the heat lamp at night only and just enough to take the chill off. By 6 weeks you can take the heat away permanently.
