Hawk Attack!!! Caught on Camera.

I have said this on another thread about hawks but I really can't go past the good old glitter balls hung about the place - they sell them in the $2 shops in packs of six near us and I have them all over the place. I haven't seen the hawk since (I do have other things going on to deter it but think the glitter balls are the best). the are sparkly, move and you can see them from AGES away.
I also have a kite of an eagle!

I had a similar experience - hawks have never gotten one of my free ranging birds but seem to always be flying around in a menacing fashion. Had one the other day fly UNDER the deck of our walk out and go after a hen. The hens sounded the alarm which alerted Churchill, the dog in my avatar. Ever since a juvenile coyote spooked my hens and they let out the alarm call and he chased that coyote, whenever he hears the girls panicked he is ready to rumble with whatever is causing the commotion. So, I let him out and he was on the hawk's tail, lunging and barking and growling as the hawk gained altitude and sailed away. Great to have a chicken guard dog!
Love a chicken guard dog. Mine does the same thing, except we trained him to the hawk call, if he hears a hawk he goes nuts, even if he is inside.
I underestimated a hawk and it's cost me dearly. I am now in the process of acquiring a 14'x6'x6' dog kennel which I will top off with fishing line. No more free ranging for my hens :(

I get this image of hens and roosters at a disco. Pretty funny.

Waiting to see this video.

If you are having a hawk problem that you cannot succeed, I might have a suggestion ... Me and my brother would make loud noises or gunshot noises to scare away the hawk. That might work.

After watching that video I am waiting to go outside and see the hawks perch in the large Oak laughing at my efforts to keep them out! Hopefully the aviary netting will get here soon!

WOW that video was Incredible! I had no idea bird of prey could do that!

Not all can, at least those like red-tailed hawks typically targeting adult chickens cannot. Hawk in video (goshawk) is relative of our smaller Coopers hawk and like our Coopers can really do some tight manuvering. Problem is hawk need not be so manuverable to catch most chickens, especially the fluffy-butts that have no cover or other form of protection. Goshawk in video is a more northern critter that thankfully I do not have to deal since it would seriouosly challenge my anti-hawk system.
