Hawk Attack- Pics may be considered graphic!!!!!!

Any particular flavor of dog or cat canned food? It is in the upper 80's would a heat lamp make her too hot ? If not I'll put it on her - I covered the crate with a towel just to keep it darker quieter and warmer .
Thanks again for all the help .

Awww, I'm sorry to hear about your Silkie & it sounds like she's on her way to healing. I'd be really, really upset to see any of mine injured like that. Please keep us posted...I'll be subscribing. Good luck!

How's she doing?

I used pedigree canned dog food, not sure what flavor. I don't think they care and love all of it. In fact, they go crazy over it. I wouldn't feed it often but I think if you have a sick or injured bird who is not eating well, it can get them to eat something for a little strength.

As far as the heat lamp, I'm not sure. I would use your judgment. My recently injured bird (who is doing great now) was all wet from the wound cleaning and stressed so I put her under the heat lamp for awhile until she was seeming perkier.

Hope she is doing better, I feel so sorry for them when they get hurt.

I wouldnt put a saddle on her because you want air to get at the wound. Keep her isolated from the other chickens in a clean area until she skins over. And watch out for more hawk attacks because the hawk that did this may figure she could have success next time.

Update-
So far so good- she ate a little dog food - I bought Beneful - it looked like real food - she is moving around in the cage and appears to be in good spirits -
today I will try to trim the feathers so they don't stick in the wound-
I think no more free ranging will be allowed -

I had several chickens now get nasty gashes one way or another and each has healed. As someone else stated they are remarkably resilient.

At any rate, sorry your silkie had to endure that.

Regards,
gretchen

My pen is open to the sky as it is pretty roomy, being 180 ft perimeter. I do have 3 medium size trees in there. I have heard that stringing some lines overhead discourages hawks and owls. They have really keen eyesight so they will see it and are afraid to fly in from what I have heard. I have not tried it on mine as I am still doing the fence charger installation. I do have crows about quit a bit and they always harass hawks and owls in a big way hereabouts, so I do have some protection that way. Hawks seldom get a mature bird I am told, but that does not mean they will not try! If you have a smaller run, you can buy bird netting that is used to protect strawberries and other crops. It comes in wide rolls. I suspect that it is plastic and will degrade due to ultraviolet light at some point and have to be replaced. My pen is too big to consider it, but I could do the most open parts of it. I am going to try the lines first. Probably yellow poly twine that can be bought at farm co-ops, etc.
