I let my girls out to free range this afternoon while I was outside doing fall cleanup. I have spotted hawks more frequently now that it's chilly so they only come out to free range when I can hang out with them.. All of a sudden the girls freeze and start growling ( I don't know if it's a growl or what but it's a very specific noise they make when they spot something they don't like) I spot a hawk nearby in a tree. He proceeds to fly over my house and lands in a tree in my neighbors yard. Then I hear the call to arms of a crow lol.. that brings another, and another until there are about 10 or so of them surrounding him in that tree.. the hawk takes off and the crows follow him and proceed to harass him all over the neighborhood until he disappears. I knew that by encouraging them to hang around by feeding them their daily peanuts they would defend their "turf" .. I wish I had my phone with me to video, it was a very cool thing to see!!!

I'm glad it all worked out ok for your flock! I've read of crows chasing hawks off before. What do you do to encourage the crows to hang around?
