Hawk attack while I'm standing right there!!!

I've read about hawks slipping through hawk netting... can someone explain how they do that?

Whoa, I wouldn't like to see a bird of prey near any child just in case the child makes a mistake & the bird lashes out. So are you completely redoing your run?

I had a very small coop run combo you can see in pic. But I am having the large wooden run built which will be covered top to bottom with hardware cloth. The pic so far just has frame. My contractor can't finish til he recovers from surgery. So right now that entire 24 x 12 run is covered in bird netting. I hope it will keep out this hawk for the next couple of months. There are tons of squirrels and birds in my yard and were there when it attacked. I guess it wanted a larger meal and my light brahma would have been. She survived with just some missing feathers. It got her sister in November.

Animals need to be hunted! Plain and simple. It reinforces our position in the food chain. I suspect that raptors in the suburbs are more aggressive and indifferent toward people than in the country, where it would be easier to get off a shot with out notice. I respect, no I love all animals and it saddens me what we have done to our/their environment, but if they are not an endangered species, they should be hunted or at least problem animals should be culled like they do in the UK. I have chosen to be a part of my surrounding environment, which means given the correct circumstances, I become a predator, just like the hawk. The hawk would respect that and respect is something he does not have for you at present.

Holy cow you people are scary

Why don't you go out with your revolvers and have a stand off over freaking hawks!
My fathers a biologist and all's fair in the animal kingdom.

signed: survived 2 hawk attacks, one was today.
Sorry for your loss original post. It is a little funny something similar happened to my husband. I prefer that a hawk eat than a raccoon any day but of course I feel sorry for you

Its not so much about the hawks, but the problems caused by the people who apparently don't want anything done about them being so tame.

After reading this, I'm not sure whether I feel better about the Hawk threat or worse lol. We're getting our first chicks next month and when they're big enough will free range. We live on 1.3 acres out in the country in PA, mostly cleared with woods surrounding the whole thing and some trees inside and there's a lake a couple miles away. I've heard and seen Hawks last summer (we just moved here last summer). I've even found a dead one and I know we have Eagles, foxes, bears, bobcats and fishers. There's plenty of space to hide from view from the air and we're ALWAYS outside in the summer. I'm hoping they're not that bold around here.
OP-I'm so sorry for your loss. I how you don't have to deal with it again and your run keeps them protected until your contractor can finish it.

Just like deer! I have never in the past seen deer act like they do now. I am in a different state, I'm not sure if that has something to do with it but deer where I grew up RAN, here they stand and stare at you and make me wish I had my rifle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They even come and graze on people's lawns!

They do that here where we live too! There's a field around the corner from our house and when it's not hunting season there's always about 6 of them down there. They just stare.

Thus the phrase "Deer in the headlights" look.

They do that in Missouri as well. Then when they do think they should move, they run into the road instead of away from it. You're lucky if you don't hit them with your car.

Original Poster, sorry about your first brahma, but glad you and the 2nd brahma made it to safety. I had a hawk get one of my girls last night and I can't wait for the weekend to come up with some sort of cover for my run.
