Short story of it
Hawk got my cream lagbar. 3 days ago She is like a roadrunner. Her name is Blueberry.

I thought she was done. I came outside in the middle of it. Traumatic to say the least.
She ran off as the hawk flew away because I came outside.
What I have done:
Wrapped her in a clean towel and held her tight and prayed oh and cried ALOT.
Checked the injuries and cleaned everything with saline wound wash
Cleaning 3 times daily with antiseptic wound wash, saline wound wash, and the poultry wound wash everyone says is amazing.
Triple antibiotic ointment
Puppy pads that I change 3- times a day
She is pooping solid poop 1-2 times a day
Liquids she doesn’t want food
Heat lamp and darkness

Her skins looks pink and it does all look better. She lost a TON of feather. Like two birds full it seemed. Only one side- top- mid of her body.

The hours after it happened she wouldn’t open her eyes, she wouldn’t lift her head, and her comb went completely white. I actually think she died and came back.

We were going to bury her and I took her out of the towel and she stood up.

We have her in a big dog crate in a box with clean towels rotating as I clean her.
No active bleeding
I think she has a puncture on her face so that’s why her one eye stayed closed. She opened one eye after about 3 hours after the attack. Yesterday she opened her other eye.
She will look at you and turn to noises.
She is standing and lying down

She will drink if I give it to her.

What I need HELP with:

I noticed some bubbling by her neck. As things have started to heal I can see better and when she drinks it trickles out.
There is definitely a hole. It looks clean and pink.

HELP!!!! What can I do? We have no vets that care for chickens.

super hard to tell but it’s the part in the middle of the pic. So it looks like a tube almost and it curls like a snail.

I know it looks bad but she is healing the dark is baby feathers. When I do the wound wash they comes off.

So sorry about your hen’s injuries. Looks like the hawk got her crop area and damaged it. I would keep trying to find a vet to hopefully repair it if it doesn’t seal itself. The injuries are so bad it is hard to discern how much damage there is. I would ease off cleaning the wound to twice a day, simply spraying wound spray and then applying the triple antibiotic ointment. Try offering a watery mash of chicken feed with bits of scrambled egg. Canned cat food and tuna or ground meat are also good.Make anything you feed watery, and in small amounts to interest her. Let us know how she gets along.

Thank you! I will cut down on the wound wash. I don’t touch it I just spray it jsit to be clear lol. I will try the liquid mash for food. Her breathing is good. Do you think it will heal itself? Is that a thing?

I guess it would be her shoulder that has no feathers. There was really minimal blood. I know a featherless chicken doesn’t look good ever. I feel like she is definitely healing though. Am I torturing her but not putting her down? I have cried and prayed so much I feel horrible.

I am always in favor of trying to help an injured chicken get better if possible. It is worrying if her crop is injured and liquids are leaking out. Crops can heal on their own if the wound is small, and crop surgery or superglue can also close up a wounded crop. Wounds themselves will eventually heal, but any damage to crop or organs make complicate matters. Getting her to eat and drink are important. Tube feeding is also a possibility if her crop is functioning. You may want to get a weight on her with a kitchen scale to monitor if she is losing weight. It doesn’t sound like you are torturing her, but trying to save her.

Y’all she is a dog on miracle!!! Jesus loves all his children and all the animals. I’m sure including hawks but when I get to the gates we will have a talk about those hawks. Y’all I had to stitch her crop. It just wouldn’t stay dry enough to keep the super glue. She was the best patient. She is eating, drinking, currently perched. She has both eyes open and pooping normal poops!!! I have a nb onesie on her like a harness to cover that area so she can’t pick directly at it! A miracle I tell you!!! I don’t have a fat clue what I’m doing. I just had to try my best. She is so funny. When she is done eating or drinking and I try to give her more she turns her head as if she was a toddler lol I have been keeping her swaddled which puts her right to sleep and then letting her stretch a couple times a day.

I wish her feathers would grow back faster! Haha I didn’t use dissolvable stitches so I would think 2 weeks and then gently clip them out?! Im
Wingin it over here!! Thank you again for all your help and encouragement!!
Oh and I’m sure she will never lay another egg after all the trauma but that’s ok! Hahaha

It has been 4 days. I am thinking 14 days is plenty as well! Wish me luck taking them out haha! She is in a onesie right now. I will get better pics!
