Hawk got our precious lakenveldor! HELP asap!!

Yes,the skin will grow over muscle, wound will heal from the inside out. I normally do not recommend covering wounds, but in her case cover with a light sterile gauze.

Some signs of infection are: foul smell coming from wounds,redness/swelling of wound, bird not eating/drinking,lethargic.

Keep her on soft foods, you do not want any stress placed on crop in the next 24-48 hours. If she is sleeping, wait till morning then offer her water. Eggs are a great soft food, oatmeal is another,

If you feel she is in pain, you can give a low dose aspirin(81mg) or a reg (325mg) aspirin. Dose is 25mg per lb of body weight, crush and place in water or sprinkle over feed or give orally(wrap in pce of cheese or meat). Keep her warm, when ill/injured birds cannot regulate their body temp.

No, more like 4x4 inch spot. It is most of her right breast. I really hope she makes it. But again...if she isn't going to I don't want to prolong it and make her last days long and painful. This just stinks! But I am glad we caught the hawk! Another few seconds and she would have been dead for sure!

Thanks so much for your help

I don't know what to do:( We have glued the big hole shut 3 times now. She still leaks water when she drinks. We keep redoing, waiting a few hrs then letting her try a sip. I am stuck for ideas now. I am willing to try stitches if we can find some at like a vet supply place or something (think that is possible?)

She is acting great. She is eager to drink. We haven't offered food since we haven't been able to close the hole..no point.

I am starting to wonder if it would be better to just end it. I hate this! I just don't want her to hurt!

If you have a small animal vet, call and ask them if they'll sell you the stuff. If they won't, you could try a needle and thread or dental floss maybe?

I'm sorry that your girl got hurt. I have found that different types of super glue work better then others. There are even some that are sterile for use in kits, makes a more flexible bond instead of stiffening up like regular superglue. http://www.1cascade.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=6559
It is more expensive, army surplus stores have it also. Some in med kits / first aid with items for minor surgery, makes you wonder what they consider "minor". Everyone has had different levels of success and experience dealing with severe wounds, do not feel bad.

I myself would try stitches, dental floss works, well I used it on a piglet. Don't pull them too tight or they cut right through what you are trying to fix. Vet might give you what you need, or try medical supply or army surplus stores.

Only thing I can think of is the super glue doesnt want or can't make a bond on the crop skin because of some moisture or dries too stiff. I wish you both well and hope what you choose to do is the best for you both.

I wouldn't give up on her as long as she's looking to eat and drink. Even with holes in the crop you should still try the suggested soft foods oatmeal etc. she will need to eat and some will get in. Have you tried amazon for the suture? They sell everything!

After you glue her I would put her on a general anti infective antibiotic for infection prevention as well.i wish you the best of luck! God bless.

You can use silk thread to stitch an internal wound. Double the thread b/c you want a strong stitch. Tie off each stitch separately and do not stitch too tight.
Sterilize needle till red hot, sterilize thread by using rubbing alcohol or steam, whichever you prefer. Use a saline solution to clean area prior to suturing.

Note: Some dental floss contains or is coated with PTFE,this is a teflon coating, DO NOT USE. Some may be made from silk, this is ok as long as it has no PTFE coating.

Once you have wound stitched, watch for infection as this is going to be the biggest challenge b/c wound has now been open for couple of days and bacteria may have contaminated wound. I would put her on a antibiotic. She should be fine once wound is stitched.

If you have embroidery floss around home,it may be made from silk.

Note: if you cannot purchase surgical thread from a vet or cannot locate silk thread, then i would use 100% cotton. This needs to be closed/sterilized ASAP.
