Hawk killed all 47 chickens in an hour!

As said, very unlikely it was the work of hawks.
I agree with the dog concept.Done for fun, fast and then gone.Coyotes would kill to eat, and would have fed on the birds they killed. If you know your neighbors dog has been around your place, well...
Sorry for your terrible loss, the predator/predators must pay....! They will be back looking for more fun in time.I'd set up a gamecam, and be aware of any fresh animal tracks.Good luck getting the culprit.

Thank you, all for your advice and sympathy. We think it's most likely the neighbor's dog. My family is still in shock. the site was pretty horrific with the carcasses everywhere. It's just so sad.
Makes me so angry! All we can talk about now is how to get that dog!!!
I just can't believe a dog can do such a thing so quickly!
I feel so guilty for letting this happened. they were doing fine, but the weather has been nice lately and there is grass that they like to eat.
Just never expect this to happen.

I'm thinking about getting a trap for that dog. I've been told that once a dog has killed it will not stop. I agree with some of you that talking to the neighbor isn't going to prevent this in the future even if the neighbors are nice and try to keep the dog locked up. One day it will escape and it'll kill again.
Will keep you updated if I have anymore evidence of the dog killing the chickens.
Again, thank you.

Funny that you and I think the same. I totally agree that talking to the neighbor will only cause more problems. The SSS method is most likely what we'll do.

I just noticed you live in commie CA. We moved out of CA last year to AZ...here in AZ I can follow that dog OFF my property and kill it in the street if I feel he was threatening my livestock. Those commies are working hard in CA to rip any gun law right you have..you better get to researching and you better get to fighting for your rights.

Well, I can tell you that it didn't stop us from owning guns. And that dog is going to get it.

My best friend and her husband had a dog that was killing livestock in their rural area but they really had no idea it was doing so. They had adopted the dog as a stray and had him neutered and were training him. A neighbor did eventually shoot the dog in the act and my friend was notified by the sheriff. It was a sad situation all around since they really loved that dog and it was a very sweet dog with people and even other dogs and cats. However, they did do the right thing and paid for the livestock that had been killed. The point of this being that sometimes dog owners want to be responsible and that you never know until you try talking to them what sort of attitude they have. My friends would have done whatever they needed to do to keep their dog from killing other animals or being killed. They had already spent hundreds of dollars on getting that dog healthy and shots and neutered and they themselves have livestock so they probably would have found the dog a better home in the city. They felt REALLY bad about what the dog had done.

I think it is at least worth talking to the neighbors about their dog...If you haven't regularly seen the dog out and about it's not really fair to assume they don't have control of the dog. I never leave our dog outside without me but she has run into the neighbors yard a few times and it has taken me a few minutes to get her.

It might have been the first time the dog really got away. Maybe they do a good job of keeping it locked up otherwise. Don't just make assumptions! Talk to the neigbors tell them the situation and if you DO see the dog again you will be forced to shoot it. This alone might make them hyper vigilant.

Just be aware...unless you can hide this incident and CA laws do not allow you to shoot your neighbor's dog..in this messed up world, you could get a record and they could sue you, end up owning your house. Make sure you know the laws...calla few feed stores...do some research. I know everything else I researched in CA is what drove me out...good luck!
