Hawk killed all 47 chickens in an hour!

Commies?? Really..

Nothing screams take me seriously like ranting about commies.

So sorry to hear about your loss. On my coop I have netting over the top and wire mesh buried 2ft in the ground as well as a double gate. I like to have all the bases covered and the wires hard to do but it helps, a few monts ago I went out to check the chickens and caught a dog trying to gnaw through the chain link fence around my coop. When I walked around I saw several places where it tried to dig in at and couldn't because of the wire.

Sorry for you loss but what killed your chickens was not something that wanted to eat them. I started a thread a while back about dogs killing chickens and took some grief because I pointed out that they weren't predators in the sense of the word since they kill but don't generally eat their kill. Had that been a hawk or some predator that was killing to eat it would have stopped when it had enough to assure itself of a meal or two, only a dog would kill that many of anything without stopping. Hope you can, somehow, put a stop to it because, Yes, the dog will be back.

Thank you, woodmort.
I no long think that it was the hawk. He was just eating the dead chicks.
I think I want to trap the dog and take it to the owner as evidence.
Anybody ever trapped a large dog before? Do they build traps for catching animals like dog?
Thank you in advance for your suggestion and help. At this point I'm opened to any suggestion.

Yes they make live traps big enough-

Also you could tell your neighbor what happened (All my birds got killed) and that you are setting humane (and imply inhuman - leg hold ect) taps... do not say its his/her dog just that you are telling area pet owners someone or something is killing small animals, and during daylight w/o eating the kill the 'something' may be sick or something... lockjaw *shake your head* act like you are worried that thier animals may get attacked or trapped...

Excellent advice--don't accuse your neighbor's dog without proof but a word to the wise should be ample warning. Also imply that their animals may also be in danger from this killer as well.

Best to get proof that the dog killed the chickens before you go shooting the dog. If you're on rural property it could have been other predators. If you're convinced it's the dog, why not give his owner a warning that if you see the dog on your property again you will have to do what's necessary to protect your animals. If someone shot one of my dogs without letting me know first there was a problem, I would go to the ends of the earth to make that person pay.

If you believe it was this dog, talk to the owners before you kill the poor thing -- he was just being a dog and didn't know he wasn't supposed to kill your chickens or be on your property. It's the owners' responsibility to keep the dog away from your property. Maybe they don't even realize what happened.

wow...just wow, take that tin hat off periodically, I think it's a little tight.

I had an issue with several of my chicks with a few hawks. They killed 5 of my chicks. They weighed less then two lbs. The thing was, that the hawks they were red tails, made a real messy killing. On the other hand I had a neighbors dog wipe out massive amounts of my birds real fast. Dogs! and it is always the neighbors dog! I hope that you figure out what it was soon. I just can never take the chance of allowing my chickens to free range despite the fact that they are very large roosters and full grown hens. Nothing is worth the chance. I really don't get it though. My girlfriend has all of her chickens free range. She lives in the middle of nowhere and her dogs are fine with them. She never has predator problems. Take me for instance I am nowhere near as rural as she. I get neighborhood dog issues and hawks hover over my land all the time. I think that it is so cool to go to her house and watch her chickens run across her land and play with her goats. She is so lucky.
