In the Brooder
4 days ago I found what was left of a hawk going by the large feathers and the one foot that was left. Also right next to it the small feathers left of my small duck. Yesterday my husband saw a halk come down and sit right on top of another small duck but she and the rest of the flock ran in the shed and got away. The hawk then sat on top of the green house and looked around then flew to a nearby tree. It was a baby hawk. Today I went out in the year with my small pug mix, and a small hawk flew by low, in a few seconds was joined in the sky by a half dozen other small hawks then I saw a very large hawk with them. A family. Now I have to keep the chickens and the ducks inside the little fenced yard with roof area and in the shed. but my concern now is my small dog which from now on has to be on a long leash so that if a hawk comes down at least I can pull her away. My question is, its April now and these birds are screeching and seem to be VERY hungry. I've seen other posts saying they go away come summer, but they really don't. I"m in Massachussetts and I dont see them all winter, but weather getting warmer. they are flying around in the sky all day long. I do have a question about them. What time does a Hawk usually rest for the night. My chickens go to sleep at dusk, my ducks would stay up all night and never go in, if I did not heard them in at night. Do Hawks rest at night? is is dusk? or do they hunt at night too? We also have owls, I hear them every morning but not at nigth, usually durning the day and early In mornings hear them a lot. do they usually bother a chicken or ducks or a small dog? Thank you,
