We just found there is a pair of hawks building a nest in our pecan tree.

I'm not as much worried about the chickens they're in a enclosed run/coop. But we have a chihuahua and refuse to have it hurt.
How do we get rid of it, there is a endangered species law against killing them here?
Any suggestions???

Yup. They are protected. Try what they do in down town San Antonio. Bottle rockets. Harass then till they move on. Do it quickly before the pair have little ones. If you are out in the country then you don't have to worry about busy body neighbors.

It's even illegal to harass them. Best thing to do is keep an eye on the dog when he's out. Chances are, nothing will happen, but it's better to be sure than sorry. You might want to talk to fish and game about them to see what you can legally do.

Try reading up on the specific breed of hawk. Many WILL NOT hunt with in there nesting range. They save that quarry for when the chicks fledge. So the fledglings don't have to travel far at first to find food for themselves.

Well here's a pic of the hawk, it is on the electric pole out front.

It and it's mate flew across the street to our neighbors trees.
@woodmort; We won't cut down that pecan tree it's been in our yard for over 23 years.
Like I said we aren't worried about our chickens, they don't free-range.
But we'll be very cautious when our Chihuahua and Jack Russell are out.
I imaging this pair of hawks have been in our area for a while, we just noticed it on/around our property today.
Thank you for all your suggestions.

That looks like a red-shouldered hawk. They live around where I live, too. I haven't heard of anyone losing any dogs from them, but like I said before, it's always good to be cautious.
