I've seen post saying to have a rooster to protect the flock. Well I just seen in my notes that on Nov. 7,2018 I lost our big tough Victor to a Red-tailed hawk. I'm sure he took on the hawk so the others could run in the coop. I posted a pic. of Victor.

Lost my Polish Pullet to a hawk yesterday. My chicks were all good through Spring and Summer but Fall proved to be deadly.

I live in Eastern NC Cumberland County. We have 6 or 7 hawks we see and hear daily. Thy have lots of farm animals and pets to choose from in the area...Im hoping they never come after my birds, who are currently in their coop and doing incredibly well at 6 weeks. Though some seem to be maturing much faster than others.
Hi, I live in Eastern NC too, New Bern. I live in a community and right now I’m seeing hawks fly over my backyard everyday. My birds are 21 weeks old now and I’m always out there with them during their free range time. The hawks stay away with me there but they are keeping an eye on my pullets. I’m scare they are waiting for a moment when I walk into the house.

You need a secure run for your birds. I live out in country with woods all around, Hawks are flying above scanning for an attack. Free range chickens are never safe outside your predator proof run!

I don't free range anymore due to losses from predators in the past. My birds have nice large covered pens. I also have electric wires around my coops and pens and concrete under the gates due to losses in the past. A couple of times when I let the birds out a hawk swooped down and killed a bird not 10 feet away from me. It happened so fast I didn't have time to react. Good luck...
