Hawks....

Must have been disco or rap CDs. Those would keep anything away.

Coopers are bird hunters but they are pretty small I don't think they would try a even partially grown chicken.

For size comparison they are a little smaller than a crow.

I wonder if my Red Shouldered Friend will become a problem?

I love to watch this one and it's mate in my yard.

I have coopers in my trees all the time. The hens keep an eye on him or her or them but never seem to worried about them and to my knowledge have never gone after a full grown chicken. I did lose a 4 week old to one several years ago.

The largest bird I've seen a Cooper take was a starling, they're a bit smaller than a blue jay...so they may take a older chick, definately little chicks.

I have bantams, and they're not even full grown yet (only two months old).

We're not sure it was a Coopers, it might have been a juvenile Red Tail. It definitely was not as large as the Red Tail Hawk we saw at a raptor presentation last week.

Either way, I don't really want to test the proposition about whether they'd attack my chickens or not. Better safe, than sorry.

A Cooper's Hawk was in my chicken enclosure yesterday eating one of my silkies when i got home from work. They cant carry them away, but they dont mind hanging around to eat your chickens.

I also caught a Cooper's Hawk dragging one of my bantams across the ground a few weeks ago - fortunatley for him, i was able to get out there in time - but those hawks have a lot of nerve.

I think the red tails are responsible for some mysterious dissappearances.

I am going to scrounge up some CD's and hang them tonight.

I read up on Coooper's Hawks this morning - they have also been called chicken hawks.
