hay in the run

Hello and welcome, I have just started a few monthe ago. i did have roost's but my girls don't use them they all go to sleep in the hay i have put down for them, is this a bad thing as they seem very happy

It is instinct for fully grown chickens to roost as high as they can at night. It comes from being low on the food chain.

Young chickens will sometimes sleep on the floor, but instinct usually takes over eventually and they want to get up high. If you put your roosts higher than your nests they will naturally start to roost on them as long as you have enough roost space and comfortable perches. This will prevent pooping in the nests at night and some very dirty eggs once they start laying.

Hi thanks for that info my coop has a nesting box's on the side they don.t sleep there at night but in the main part of the coop i have put down straw for them i did put perch's up for them but they don't use them.they just seem happy on the straw.is this a bad thing the coop is up about 2ft off the floor. i have only started having the girls in last 6months and still getting to grip with chicken life. should i put them back and hope they use them they are only 7 months old and lay really well.

yea i left it as a whole bale, it was origanlly for when we went on vacation so it would keep them busy, but they realy liked it and i didnt want to take it away , now its everywhere! dont think it will be that hard to clean up, but maybe next time i wont put as much down. i think it keeps them warm too because they all huddle together and take naps lol. so cute
