well i had made my mind i would get a rooster. i decided against the neighbors br that i thought i should save from the stew pot and ended up with a black coochin. he is now 7 months old. the girls are tolerating him,at least he can eat in peace!! but no crowing. my dh insists i have another hen. i said that he may just take awhile! so who is right? should he,if he is a he, be crowing by now? and will he ever be master of the flock,or just the whipping boy?

Your title confused me, LOL. Nope, that rooster wont ever lay an egg! You ought to post pictures so we can see if you have a rooster or a hen. Crowing sometimes can take till they are almost a year old for some individuals.

Do you have a picture? How long have you had him? 7 months, I would think he would be at least trying to crow. But if he has been the submissive roo for a while and just moved to your place, he may need to get his confidence and then look out.

I think you need to go back and read the title of your thread very slowly and carefully.

I wouldn't expect an 8 month old rooster to be laying either!

It's not unheard of for an 8 month old roo to not be crowing yet.
When he's fully mature (and crowing) I'm willing to bet that he teaches those hens he's the boss.

I have two young cochin roosters, I have seen them doing the 'deed', but neither one makes a point of crowing! I have heard little practise crows a while back, but nothing since it got really cold. My other young Roo, a blue laced Wyandotte, crows regularly, tho it is not pretty, sounds really backwards and broken!

Give him more time, I think the cochins are just more laid back then everybody else!

Good Luck!

I really shouldn't be laughing. I tend to have chickens on the brain alot. I've told my SO that I "need to change the chicken's litter box" or "buy more dog biscuits for the chickens". Now I know why he looks at me so funny.
