fuzzi's Chicken Journal

You're getting quite a bit of snow @fuzzi I wonder how @lightm is doing in Wilmington!

We got around 6" (on top of the ice that was still here:rolleyes: ). Tonight the wind is gusting and it's around 9F, wind chill -11F, so make it through tonight and tomorrow, things will be looking better, temperature wise anyway:)

Hope everyone stays safe and warm!

Still snowing...

Look at the top of the trash can, just beyond my car.

Thank you.

I'm thinking about my chicks...

Well you built a good sturdy pen that should be able to take the load. But as soon as you get the chance I would rake off some of the snow from the top so that you don't have a dangerous collapse. The snow will actually insulate the coop and make it warmer and less drafty.

I hope everyone in Fuzzi and Friends Land is doing well this morning!

It was 7F this morning and the wind is gusting, hopefully it will die down in a few hours. The chickens (and Pigeon) all survived the night, the sun is shining, we have hot coffee, water, electricity and the wood stove is keeping our home warm.
So many things to be thankful for!

It's risen to a balmy 16 here, and snowing again. We got 8" yesterday but today's snow seems light and shouldn't add much. I covered the open part of the run's roof with a tarp, scooped out more snow this morning and brought in a big bag of leaves I collected from the creek bed this fall, so they are doing okay. Complaining about not being able to go out, though. And yes, so very much to be thankful for!

We got about 8 inches of snow for sure, maybe more! This is a lot for us here.

For the first time ever, chickens won't come out of their coop! Early this morning it was 18. Today's high will be 32. They survived the night, but they WILL NOT come out of their tiny coop, that is only for sleeping. I think it is the windchill that has really gotten to them.

This morning I had to take down a roost bar of the coop (only designed for sleep) and put food and water inside.

Yesterday afternoon, I bought a shower curtain, and then clear vinyl sheeting to cover one side of the run so that they will feel better in the run. Pictured below:

However, it did not help at all as the wind comes from the left of the picture (You can see how the powder snow has shifted on these two chairs). That side of the run is just chicken wire and hardware cloth, not wind proof, so overnight the chicken run was completely covered with snow.

The original intent of covering the side of the run was actually for Meimei, who has been isolated in her own cage, at a corner of the run (behind the black shower curtain). She had an open wound and was being pecked at. But her cage was completely covered by snow this morning :hmm. (Pictured below by our run camera.) Meimei cannot be in that cage anymore, so she is inside the house...

I noticed how the snow was insulating the coop, but when I put my hand up against the hoop to steady myself the snow slid off.

Straw over the dusting of drifted snow:
