We have 2- 4 day old baby Cochins. We have a brooder set up in garage, its a large tub with a red heat lamp. We keep the garage door open during the day but it is still quite warm in there at least 85 degrees or higher. Should I turn the heat lamp that is only facing in one corner off during the day? They still seem to stay over there sometimes but it just seems like overkill with these Florida temperatures! I wish I had made the heating pad apparatus, but just read about it yesterday. Please chime in if you have any suggestions.

Get a thermometer.
Place it under the heat lamp.
Report back with the temperature.

Do the same for the other side of the brooder...the side that the heat lamp is not on.

I'm going to say to turn it off...even before hearing the temps.

I don't think they will absolutely need a heat lamp, unless it's night time. Especially since they are kept in the garage, the heat usually stays in there. If you want to completely eliminate the heat lamp, I think they would be just fine, although I would recommend a small cardboard box with holes in it to put on top of the chicks. ( acts like a mother hen )
I hope this helps! :thumbsup
