I really believe they are better off too cool than too warm. It doesn't take much to cook them -- they dehydrate rapidly when very young, and that starts the downward spiral. A solid sided container like a plastic tub IMO is not a very good brooder because they also need a good exchange of fresh air. I know lots of people use them, but.... You might want to read in the sticky at the beginning of this section, the link about young chick mortality.

I have some two or three week olds in the coop with a red heat lamp, now on a timer for night only. They've been there since the day I brought them home from TSC and my broody wouldn't accept them.

x3. I usually use a 125 watt for the first couple days if it's cold outside, but chicks in the house get a 60 watt bulb by day 3.... and if it's warm out, they get a 60 watt from the start. Also, you can hang your lamp from the ceiling using wire or chain.

ETA: I always use rubbermaid totes in the house. But not, of course, with a lid. I have extremely few chicks die... maybe 1-2 a year out of hundreds.

I am using a 50 gallon brooder. At first I used a 250 watt heat bulb. I attached it to the side of the brooder. The chicks looked like they were DYING. I had no clue what was wrong. I found out that I was slowly cooking them

I hope ther okay. There almost 3 weeks old now. I had it set on a chair (above the brooder) now I put a y'all laundry basket on top of the chair... I don't even hav it angled on the brooder. Its more twards the corner but most of the light is facing the carpet and their toatly fine. It was my first ever set of chicks. O well haha. There still alive and cute as ever!

When your chicks are 2 wks old start reducing the heat considerably, this will tell the chicks internal workings to produce full feathers more rapidly, hence making them more resiliant and ready for the outdoors sooner. I like to move mine outside at 2 weeks with only a minor heat supplement, and you will be amazed at how fast they feather out and no longer need any heat supplement.
