Heading to lockdown

Hi Guys,

I thought I would journal my last days/week of incubation. Today is day 18 of incubating Australorps and I am a first time incubator. Of the 12 eggs I bought from a breeder 5 were infertile and 1 had a blood ring, I am left with 6 I believe healthy and growing looking embryo's. I have attached images of my incubator that I am using, nothing special but so far so good. There are quirks with this machine eg. humidity fluctuations, and perhaps cold spots in certain areas, which is why I wrapped the majority of the machine in towels to give a more consistent temperature. I have tried my best to verify temperature with a separate glass thermometer and humidity has been aimed towards 50% with fluctuations along the way, but never for too long. I have candled along the way and all embryos show signs of growth and filling the egg shell with nice air sacs (I will photograph before lockdown). The 6 eggs are currently sitting in the front 2 rows and in the middle as this is where I believe the most consistent temperature is.

My idea for lockdown is along these lines, obviously take the yellow tray out and line the sides with 2 water bottles so the potential chicks don't fall down the sides as there is a gap. Place non slip mats down and fill up all water channels. Place the 6 eggs down on the mat and sticky tape the lid shut. Unfortunately there is an alarm associated with humidity which I lowered during the incubation process from 45% to 35% as this would go off during the middle of the night and wake me. The main issue I see is with the higher end of humidity the alarm goes off at 69% and then continually beeps. My aim is to make sure there is condensation on the lid and believe this can be achieved at 65-70% humidity. I live in Melbourne, Australia were it is Spring so there is not too much outside humidity factors to deal with.

Any tips, suggestions at this stage would be invaluable, although I am trying to keep out of the way at stick to the KISS principle.

Well I am in lockdown - I have taken the trays out, added some wet sponges to the side, filled up the water trays and put a few non slip mats down. The humidity alarm went buzzing straight away over 69% and it beeps, I have managed to bring it down to 69% and keep a good deal of humidity and condensation in the incubator. The alarm hasn't gone off since 2AM! So now the waiting game begins.

I candled all 6 eggs before lockdown and all looked good, a sample is attached. I see movement in the embryos and even some eggs have rocked gently lying down. Any tips from now guys?

Update Day 20.

The alarm still drives me crazy and it is hard to get under 69% whilst maintaining good condensation on the lid (which is my barometer). I have noticed 1 egg moving around, this is the top right one and the others have not moved at all. So far no pipping. At this stage if I am to get any to hatch my money is on the top right one.

Do you mean hygrometer? Condensation is usually way above 69%.
....unless maybe it's really chilly in incubator room(not sure about that tho).

I'm so sorry you haven't had any replies yet! Did you calibrate your hygrometer? The condensation without any hatched chicks makes me think it may be too high.

It is only early on day 20 so I am not particular worried at this stage, my gut feeling is that they will hatch late. Everything has been calibrated, but just a gut feeling that they may be on the later side if they hatch.

Yes unfortunately it has been a bit chilly (about 13 degrees celcius) in the laundry, obviously when I put the heater on it goes up so I have tried to keep things pretty much the same throughout the process.

Day 21 but still technically day 20 as I didn't set the eggs in the incubator until 2.30PM and it was 7AM when I noticed a Pip.

After the first pip, another pip appeared lower down the egg and then when this was made it took all of 20 mins for the chick to be out and bustling around.

There are now 2 more pips.
