Heard an odd thing...

I went to the feed store today to look at the new chicks that came in. There was an elderly lady picking out chicks from the straight runs. She would grab a chick and look at it's face and say "that's a rooster" then pick up another one and say that's a rooster, too" After about six or seven she lamented, " are they all rosters?" I couldn't help myself, I leaned over close to her and asked her how she knew by looking at their faces. She looked at me rather irritated and didn't answer. Not to give up that easily, I said, "are you going by the expression on their faces?" She was amused by my question and she smiled (my intention all along) and said, "no, I'm looking at the combs, the boys' usually have a bigger comb, but not always." I can't argue with that...like was said, works 50% of the time! LOL

another way to sex is to fan out the wing of a new chick and if the secondaries and primaries are the same length it is a male if the primaries are longer than the secondaries than they are females. But it only work on chicks up to three days old. This trcks works for me about 85% of the time.

I tried and my bebe's tail didn't do either thing! Just my luck!!!

Hi! Interesting post! I am wondering if the tail V thing or staying straight has to do with the "squat reflex" in mating? When my adult hens squat, their tails kinda go down like that? Just a thought. Anybody with more on the feather idea? Our daughter wants one of those Golden Laced Polish chickens, but the place we have gotten our chicks from only has them as a straight run. Wouldn't hurt to give it a try?

another way about 80 to 90 accurate is a hen will get its wing/tail feathers before a rooster then in slw/glw if it has "eye liner" it is a hen and if it don't it is a rooster
