Still new to this chicken thing. Thanks to the efforts of a fox and a very large gray rat snake, our flock had dwindled to three hens, two senior citizen barred rocks and a two year old black australorp. We purchased four hens from a lady who buys chicks and raises them, two rhode island reds and two ameraucana hens, the reds were 12 weeks old, ameraucanas were about 8 weeks old. She was pretty sure they were both hens, but this AM I heard crowing from the coop, no one would fess up, but I suspect one of the ameraucana “hens” is a he. The two have developed differently, one has a red comb, the other basically has no comb, one (with the comb) is developing upright tail feathers, the other has a smaller tail, more like the rest on the hens. So which one is the he?

But leave him in there, those older girls are going to teach him proper chicken society, and how to be a gentleman. I would leave him there as long as possible. If he gets too rowdy, well then you should pull him, but being raised with older hens is generally very good for roosters.

If you can't legally keep him, I would advertise him as being raised in a multi-generational flock.

Here are photos of the two, is the larger comb and upright tail the marks of a rooster?
