Heart Ache

Loss is tough but part of life we shall improve and carry on. Still not sure how it gained entry. They are merciless when they gain entry and attack.

Loss of my flock is bad enough what makes matters worse it could have been easily prevented. My birds would have been safe if I had not forgot to put the floor pan back in place after cleaning the parrot cage. The weasel could not have gained entry if not for that oversight.

OMG... So sorry for your loss... I know exactly how you feel.. a mongoose got into my coop and killed most of my pigeons... and I had spend a log time (and lot of money) getting them healthy after they got a disease.. and they had just started to rise new squabs too.

It struck twice.. and in the end I demolished the coop and build a new metal predator proof one... only to have a pack of dogs come in and rip off the wire front one night... luckily they did not get any birds.

I was going to give up as I only had a few left and could not get any more of that breed. But I carried on and am glad I did.

So don't give up!

Sorry for your loss!
Only Way to pred proof your loft coop etc.. is hardware cloth between wood on Windows, to keep anything that may slip past hotewire fencing or netting. or go old school and have aggressive a pair of old style large boned/bodied, wire haired jack russel terriers (theyre loyal and ferocious also though), should do to ward off large and small preds n pests.

Rewrote above some at bottom,as forgot to say best breed n standard name: big/thick boned/bodied, old standerd of one style of wire haired (makes great easy cleaning n staying as well as armor), jack russel terriers. theyll take on n kill a badger (tested for breeding rights here by dropping male in barrel with a badger or woodchuck.. sadly, but bred fierce though, etc even n heard of them here were unfortunatly old type survives as a fighting n hunting dog, that can kill a pitbull in one on one fight, n in group wear n bleed down etc bear boar n other game. Good ol working stock so lost mostly but useful to ones who look forother than bad show stock.

Here in Cape Verde, i hurry about 2 predators, neighbour cats and thieves.
So that is my loft.

Somehow I missed this post - you have my sincerest sympathy. Trust me in that I understand the feeling of responsibility. One night because of an overfly I left the bobs non secured on one of my lofts. A GHO entered and killed many of my birds. I never made that mistake again. You can get new birds, but I understand the attachment to a family of birds.
