Heart breaking day on the farm...

My elegant beautiful sweet bantams and little ducks were slaughtered about three hours ago by and neighbors wild ,dirty ,****ing asshole ,cruel dog....it’s really hurt me deeply and I want this seamlessly senseless act of cruelty to be answered for guess I’m just wanting some comfort and if possible a little info on deal with this mutt and if I can end it’s life legally ,any kind words and info would be greatly appreciated ,thanks to all the BYC members.
I'm so sorry. I have been there. But it was my own dogs that killed My 22 Muscovy ducks. They were raised with them and after 3 years something just snapped I guess. My hubs and I went fishing, gone 4 hours, drove down the drive there were bodies everywhere. I will never understand why or how. These ducks roost in the trees.
So very painfulto find all your babies dead. I would shoot the dog and haul it off without ever saying a word about it.

This is so sad to read—I'm very sorry. It feels worse when it is constant carelessness on the part of the owner, too. How awful, to lose your sweet precious flock! :(

Bobo's wife, thank you for the update. Glad I read through the entire thread to see that the proper authorities are looking into the situation.

I looked vigorously into my legal rite and everything says I can kill it but I hate killing thing I don’t hunt or fish super empathetic to animals but if I don’t deal with it he’s just gunna keep killing me babies I can’t have that.I suppose we will see what the”officials do about it tomorrow if anything at all,If nothin is don’t I’ll shoot em all since there’s like a pack of let god sort out.its just eating me alive at the moment.

If you do not want to kill it. Try loading a shotgun shell with rock salt. Then it does not kill them Or leave shot in them but burns a long time. I did that to a couple Chows that killed a 5 month old colt in Texas. Only had to shoot them once, never came back

When I worked on a cattle ranchAny dog that stayed into our property was shot. It was a hard thing to do but you can’t have them killing livestock. Once they do it they’ll do it again.

A year ago a my neighbor's large dog jumped my (inadequate) fence and killed and mauled 5 of my six hens. It took him only half a minute and he jumped back and went home. I had to slit the throats of two of them to put them out of their misery.

I didn't know how much it would shake me up. They were pets as well as beautiful egg suppliers. So fun and silly to watch.

But, it's what dogs do. One of my dogs would do the same thing if he got in their run, so I make sure he doesn't. I went to see my neighbor and she took responsibility for her escape artist hound. In the end, she rehomed him because she couldn't keep him from jumping her fence and while he was a big, goofy luv bug with people and small children, he was a danger to prey animals and got out too often.

I installed a fence that keeps out dogs, no matter how high they jump. I started again with my remaining hen, two 6 week old pullets and 7 adorable peeps. They now are a happy lot and I'm much more careful with how I protect them from predators of all kinds.

So sorry for your loss. Losing an animal is no less painful if you've raised it from a baby than losing a friend. As far as the neighbor's dogs, if they are not getting fed properly, or are running as a pack, then you do have a serious problem. Again, sorry for your loss, and I hope one day you can start anew.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Dogs are supposed to be on a leash if not in their home. First try to talk to the dogs owner. Show pictures of the damages if you can. Ask them to pay for said damages. If things go south call the police and file a report. You may have to go to court (small claims). If this has happened previously the dog may have to be put down. This happened to someone else on here recently.

If the dog tried to bite you, you probably have more leverage with animal control. It has killed livestock and attacked a person and would definitely be considered a dangerous dog. If the people are as negligent with their animals as you say, they may be the sort to deny that it's their dog or dogs at all to avoid fines or charges. That makes it easier for animal control to take charge of the loose dogs as strays.

I don't know about the tactic of not involving authorities. People get very confrontational about their animals and about being told someone wants their dog put down. If you and your remaining animals are in danger it's better to get it taken care of than have an angry neighbor coming after you because you "took care" of their dog on your own.
