Heart breaking day on the farm...

Same here, several times and always husky/husky crosses. The only predator worse than those breeds (labs, spaniels, pit bulls who roamed here always ignored the chickens, but the Huskies just came to get their kill fill) is the mink. Animal control fined the owners of those dogs, and eventually I invested in a Kuvasz LGD to protect my flocks. The wandering retrievers, pitbulls and spaniels are welcomed for play by the LGD, but she HATES the Huskies and anything else that may pose a threat to "her" babies ;)

Same thing happened to me a while back. 3 years of torture and about 35+ slain birds..

Bought 8 feet fence and all.. after the 4th time the dog jumper over; I went and spoke one last time to the owner. “No; I will not find my dog a new home” I said “ok”

At that moment I knew that was the last time.
2 months later + AR15 + 5 shots; jumped back and died in its kennel. Called animal control; in turn called my legal defense network insurance; had a lawyer within 15 minutes on the phone.

Legal advise; police showed ; asked enough for me to say “anything more, I’ll need my lawyer” no more questions then. Animal control placed dog in a bag and there it in his own trash.

That was the end of that. It did take about 3 months for him to be cool with me again; but since then; his dogs are a bit more secured. Not a whole lot either; but I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot the dog again.

So sorry to hear about your loss, and I know what it's like. A few years ago, two dogs (nice, friendly retrievers) killed my Barred Rock hens and rooster. Best thing for prevention of this sort of occurrence is to invest in electric netting. It's saved my flock from foxes and raccoons, as well as dogs. From what I've heard, though, dogs cause more fatalities than anything else. People are very resistant about this, though. When I lost my flock to dogs, almost all my neighbors tried to blame it on weasels, foxes, and raccoons, even though I had seen the dogs there.
I don't know where you are, or what your laws are, but here in Nova Scotia we are allowed to shoot or otherwise kill any creature harming livestock. Best of luck!

That’s awful! Did your birds survive their raids!
Most of the time the birds would raise such a commotion that we were able to dash outside and chase the dogs off. The constant threats did prompt me to buy a new “varmint” gun though.
Labs are bread to retrieve, and as such don’t usually bite down on the “game”, only holding it tight enough to bring home. One of our favorites, Blondie, did get carried off and suffered shock with some minor injuries. She never really totally recovered well enough to rejoin her flock and spent the rest of her life living in the house with us. We made her as comfortable as we could. She had a bedroom and a day room. When she would walk from one to the other the cats would line up and watch her like it was a whole parade.
Memories can bring tears, joy, and sometimes both together.

My elegant beautiful sweet bantams and little ducks were slaughtered about three hours ago by and neighbors wild ,dirty , cruel dog....it’s really hurt me deeply and I want this seamlessly senseless act of cruelty to be answered for guess I’m just wanting some comfort and if possible a little info on deal with this mutt and if I can end it’s life legally ,any kind words and info would be greatly appreciated ,thanks to all the BYC members.
Im late finding this but if you haven't call the county sheriffs dept and talk with deputies. They will know of other complaints and be able to advise you of your rights in your particualar state county region.
I have lost multiple birds at a time and it does hurt deeply If somthing killed every last one I would probably go insane with grief. I am so very sorry for your loss.

I only need a single shot from a 22. I know how to shoot.

I’m so sorry that happened to your beautiful bantams. I’ve had it happen to my chickens before and it might help to contact your local police to see what the laws are. That dog will keep killing now, not only yours. You have rights to protect your animals and dogs usually aren’t allowed to run free in any towns or Counties anywhere. The owners should be cited.

I have ne relationship with them I just try to mind my business they don’t keep there hard cut or house clean and the herd of ferial dogs the call pets have been running creek for months killing my grandmas cats I tried no lethal ways of keep them away and it word for months and I got up to feed and they were dead all over the yard and the dog was still trapped trying to kill my game rooster in the pen and tried to bite me ,they do not care about these start muttts that roam the yard and .... just filled with anger and hurt just trying to not start a fight and get law enforcement envolved I contacted themand animal control after it happend I just don’t think they will solve the problem idk I don’t mean to sound like a cry baby but it’s got me really ****ed up I knew some support from the members might help thanks for yalls reply means a lot in the time.
Oh my goodness, how desperately desperately sad for you and your little ones !
revenge may seem like a good response but the bottom line is it’s the humans not the animals who are at fault, do you have animal cruelty you can call, take photos, warn them it could be a child next !! And keep on contacting then
Use all that righteous energy to take long term action if you can but keep it legal!!
I’ll be thinking of you

This is a late response, but I guess anyone having the same sort of problem will be reading for a solution. I can only pass on to everyone what worked for me.
I bought a dog trap. No not the sort that injures and animal, but it is like a cage which simply closes on any animal which might loiter about the coop.
I lost several birds prior. The dog was caught and I told the owner that I had it penned as being a nuisance on my property. He promised he would leash it and keep it tied . I stated that if it became trapped again I would put it into what they call a dog “pound‘... where it costs the owner to retrieve it.
Sure enough, just as many readers have stated.... it returned. So once again I approached the owner. This puts the owner on defense mode. What now? To my surprise he said he was leaving the area and I could do what I liked with it.
Happy now in a new home without access to neighboring livestock.
Having the dog caught on your property and uninjured means that the owner must act. It puts YOU in a situation of power. It makes you feel you are actually achieving something quickly without any to-ing and fro-ing of words without proof.
if it happens a few times owners will begin to see and feel the nuisance factor. All without you having to do too much.
I would recommend this method as it is truly a lack of responsible animal care by the owner.
Better still if they have to retrieve the animal from an animal control centre where it costs money to pick them up.
My story had a happy ending. I sincerely hope those readers needing help have one too.
The initial investment of one of these traps is certainly worth it. Every cent.
