So sorry to hear you lost the chick.

Sharing your sad experience will hopefully help others to prevent this happening to anyone else. I know I will keep this in mind when I get more chickens.

I am so sorry to hear this.. I am so anxiously awaiting for when mine are ready to lay.. I know how much you anticpated having her beautiful eggs as well..

oh my goodness this is horrible and I feel for you. Please dont blame yourself, you have absolutley the right attitude to look on it as a learning experience. It will never happen again.

Sorry for your loss Jody.

We've been surprisingly lucky introducing young birds to our flock. Not sure if it is the breeds, temperament, or the environment, but we've never had even a tiny problem (knock on wood).

That said, we are still very careful when introducing youngsters to our flock and watch interactions and check on them frequently so we can pull them out if needed.

It depends on the bird for me. Some go in, no problem. Others I have to re-home because the girls want the newbie dead. It just makes no sense. I put two sisters in who were about 9 weeks old to and one merged fine but the other got the crud beat out of her. I am sorry for your loss.

To avoid problems with introducing little ones later, I'm thinking about building the below brooder (found here at BYC) to put in my 12' x 12' coop with my 8 hens I got in Feb 09.

I ordered the MPC 25 pullet rainbow special shipping 9/21/09.

Do you think that would help if the big girls could see the little one's grow through the hardware cloth?
