Heartbroken

I'm very very sorry! I too have lost a chicken to a dog and many other predators and it's never easy saying goodbye. Just remember that they're in a better place now!
I am laying awake right now because a bear just tried to get into my coop. I banged on the window and scared him away. There will be no more sleep. I want to protect them but I can't stay awake all night every night. Tomorrow I will be going to Tractor Supply to buy an electric fence. No more damn dogs or bears. It's the only way to keep them safe and sleep at night.

I agree with @fayoumisfeathers. Right now we have a coyote family around so I'm really worried about the hens.

Agreed...electric fence will protect your babies and give you some peace! Good luck with your project!!!!

Feeling for you: I blame myself for this: My 4 chicks were 5 weeks old. My coop and run are not yet finished and took my girls out to enjoy the day in a fenced raised garden bed while I'm working on the coop in the back yard. My 2 dogs were getting used to them outside the fence. My smallest pup got into the fence when I ran out front for a minute and was trapped by my elderly neighbor who wanted to talk and killed all 4. I should have gone back and put the dogs in the house instead of trusting them. Will start my flock over and continue my building.

Oh man. That's hard. It's hard to be mad at the dog because it's instinct. Your attitude is best. your neighbor needed you and not everyone would take time like you did so I'm giving you a hug for that.

MY pup is a crazy sweetie and not used to chickens. I was more upset with myself, still am. New chicks will be here next week. My grandsons will be here I think this weekend to help me with building the coop and run.
