Fortunately, all my birds were confined to their yard when my GD showed up one day with 6 half grown pups in tow. We have a few acres, so she didn't leash or contain the dogs in any way; the first place they headed was the chicken yard.

I'll just say that GD doesn't bring her dogs around anymore & let it go at that.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Its always hard losing our babies.
I too have lost several to dogs. It's never easy

I'm sorry for your loss thus far I'm lucky I have not lost any of my chickens to any type of predator (knocks on wood) But I would ask that guests keep a eye or lead on dogs if my chickens were out. I don't even trust my own dog he to big dumb and playful.

Surprisingly, our cats are great with chickens. Can't say the same for the dogs, but our cats sometimes get locked in the coop/brooder room by mistake, and we never lose 1 single chick. They don't even show interest in them. Also have a coop cat who basically lives with the chickens, sleeps in the nest boxes etc. It's the strangest thing

Feeling for you: I blame myself for this: My 4 chicks were 5 weeks old. My coop and run are not yet finished and took my girls out to enjoy the day in a fenced raised garden bed while I'm working on the coop in the back yard. My 2 dogs were getting used to them outside the fence. My smallest pup got into the fence when I ran out front for a minute and was trapped by my elderly neighbor who wanted to talk and killed all 4. I should have gone back and put the dogs in the house instead of trusting them. Will start my flock over and continue my building.

My pups are super playful also so thought I had them locked out of where the chicks were but the fence wasn't secure enough and curious Jazzy found a way through. I have found that if cats or dogs grow up with another type of animal they will become friends, it is when they are older and introduced to a new animal it can cause problems. However, I do not trust my 2 pups with the little parrot they have grown up with as the pups are too rowdy and would not be careful of a 7 oz bird. Though the bird can climb around the outside of his cage all day and they will just glance at him now and then, if I'm not right there he is locked up. I've lost many an animal in my life and lost a flock of young chickens and 4 goats to coyotes years ago. Unfortunately nature is sometimes not nice.

I'm sure said guest feels terrible but, they should! Who just comes over and let's their dog run wild knowing you have free ranging chickens?? I would never do that, it's common sense and common courtesy. But like my dad says...common sense ain't so common. Very sorry for your tragic loss, hugs!!!
