Heat hardy breed chickens.!

My Wyandottes do OK. About the same as most medium feather breeds like a Plymouth Rock or similar. My Leghorns and skinny-bodied banties like OEGs always do well, as do pretty much all of my Oriental Gamefowl.

okay, I was just curious about Wyandottles because someone near me is selling two 3month olds for 20 dollars, and they are pretty

but I don't want to get them if they are going to be too hot during summer

I've had Black Australorps that did well in our heat and humidity (as well in the winter when we get an occasional freeze). They're good layers of big brown eggs too.

I was just looking into that breed, now I shall try and find someone selling theirs.! Do you know how an Orpington will do.? I know their big and fluffy, but my big and fluffy barred rock handles heat better than my skinny EE lol.!

I've never had an Orp in my flock so can't say.

I've had Black Australorps that did well in our heat and humidity (as well in the winter when we get an occasional freeze). They're good layers of big brown eggs too.

X2 on the Black Australorps. I raised them in the Corning, CA, area where summer temps frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F once) in the summer and with plenty of shade, cool water, and good coop ventilation, they did just fine. While my other dual purpose breeds were listless, panting, and holding their wings out at their sides, my Australorps were going about their usual business like troopers. It's not surprising that Australorps are so heat resistant when you consider than they are frequently raised in the Australian outback which gets very hot in the summer.

Orps do pretty bad in heat. They're not likely to die or anything but they'll be panting their way through the summers! Similar to a Cochin or Brahma, although not quite as bad.

Like I said, Wyandottes do OK. They'll do vastly better than an Orp! They're a little bit fluffy toward the butt and legs, but they've got decently tight feathering on the upper body and a small tail.

X2 on the Orpingtons. Ours really suffered in the Corning summers. Our Wyandottes and Barred Rocks faired a little better, but not nearly as well as the Australorps did.
