Heat Lamp Alternative for Brooder

Hi -

I have 6 chicks in my basement in a bin with a heat lamp. Ive used the lamp multiple times but I am worried this time around about burning the house down. This could be because I just put it on the floor to refill food and water and it burned a hole in the floor but I digress.

Is there a safer option for a brooder? They are brand new so they definitely need the heat. I am in New England and it's in the 40's today.

I'm not in the same climate, but this is what I bought to use for brooding. Chick Brooder Heating Plate It is supposed to be great, very safe, but I'm still hatching the eggs, so I can't tell you how it works yet.

I use a lamp myself..but it has the wire cage in case the light falls..

Just cleaned up after my last set of brooder chicks and, my goodness, they were DUSTY. Yea, I'm getting a heat plate for the next batch to prevent a fire. I feel like I got lucky this time.
