How long do your heat bulbs generally last? I have a red 250 watt bulb that I bought 5-1/2 weeks ago. I probably have 250 hours on it, if that, and it burned out already! The box says 2,000 hours. Yeah, right.

Did I get a bad one or should I just start buying a few at a time to have on hand? These stupid things cost $8 bucks a piece.

Normaly they will last much longer, unless of course unbeknownest to you, you got one of those crappy ones MADE IN CHINA!!!!!. I do find the clear ones do last a tad bit longer.

I sure never got 2000 hours out of any of them.

Are you sure you need something that hot?

Best I can figure 5 1/2 weeks doesn't add up to 2,000 hours, so can't you just take it back? Thats only about 900 hours on it if you ran it 24/7. If you have your receipt that tells the exact day you bought it , then you could prove the hours..Just a thought.

i could get technical here and advise you check the voltage at the socket but first, is the bulb base up or base down. some fixtures can't handle a base up configuration because the heat rises to the socket and burns out either the fixture or the bulb. since you need the bulb base up so the heat is directed at the birds it could be that the fixture that is causing the problem. i've had the 250 watt red bulbs last two years on a thermostat set to come on at 50 degrees in my dog houses.

5 1/2 weeks ago? That is no time. I have been having and using my heat lamp bulb for the last 2 years. I use them 24 hours a day for at least 7 weeks. I also use it in the cold winter months for my stray cats that live in the garage. It keeps all of them warm in the winter time. My bulb is still going strong. I purchased mine at Lowe's 2 years ago. If I were you, I would take that little darling back to the store for a full refund.

I had a 150 watt red bulb burn out after 2 weeks. It was a reptile bulb, so having it pointing down shouldn't have been a problem. I was fairly warm here at the time so it wasn't even turned on all the time. I bought is at PetsMart and I never save receipts, so I just chucked it and bought a new one.
