Heat lamp new chicks

Hi all-

I just purchased new baby chicks- my house is about 68 degrees and I put my heat lamp about 20 inches above the chicks- is that sufficient? Thanks for the help!

What is the temperature on the floor under the lamp? That is all that matters......

I am guessing the same temperature as my house- which is 68.

If they are all crowded under the lamp and snuggling eachother then it's too high and needs to be lowered.

If they are spread out on the outskirts of the lamp then it's too high so you need to raise it.

And if they are under it.. kind of spread out then it's at the correct height.

That's how I used to determine proper height/heat ratio. I am now a Brisnea Ecoglow convert so I dont have to worry about it.

The function of the heat lamp is to heat. If the temperature under the lamp is room temperature, then why are you using a lamp?

Lower the lamp until the temperature on the floor under the lamp is around 90-95 degrees. Then keep an eye on the chicks to see how they act. Reference the image below to determine if they are warm or cold.

That and having it very securely hung.
