Heat Lamp started fire! Warning!! Learn from my mistake!

OMG! I'm running down to the coop right now and check the attachment. I just turned on the heat lamp for the first time this season. Yikes. Thank you for posting.

I am terribly sorry to hear of what happened, thank you so much for warning us of the hazard.
My husband is at the store right now and I am going to call him to bring home some zip ties.
I usually do not have heat lamps in my coops but I have some birds that are still coming out of the brooding stage.

So sorry for your loss, it must be terrible for you.
Those lamp are so poorly designed, so many places the thing just comes apart. I thread wire through every part I can and
tie the wire to something high up. That way, if the lamp comes off or apart it will dangle in the air until I can get to it.

I'm in VA, so if you rebuild and want another flock, feel free to contact me and I'll give you eggs or chicks if I have anything you'd like.
Again, so sorry.

What a horrible thing to have happen.
Please start planning another coop and run, and please try again with chickens when you can.
Phoenix rising from the ashes, and all.
I hope that you have a better new year, it is a bummer way to end this one.

Thank you I will fix mine up.
Don't give up build a new coop next spring and get some more chicks.
It's to much fun. And satisfaction. Good luck .

like mahonri said I have to question using plastic zip ties to secure a heat element. I use wire, no chances for mishap. Also in my coop it is not in an area accesible to flyers. I had one young one fly into the heat lamp once while I was watching; no mishaps but I could sure picture them.
I am sorry for your loss; welcome to BYC. Stick around and come spring you will find a lot of nice people here willing to help get your flock started again, myself included.
