ibwanted to share a pic or 2 of my brooder. Just a chinamart tote with a 65 watt heat bulb. The chicks are in my livingroom. I raise or lower the lamp or change the bulb to a higher watt only when they show mw they need it. The pics show very content chicks. Not huddling, not directly under light. I do not use thermometers, they just pooped on the ones I had, lol. Thanks for looking and , good mornin sunshine.

The first time I raised chicks in the house, I used shavings, after... 10 years, I ran out of chickens minus one (never had a rooster). They first time chicks with shavings were fine No complications and other than the smell when they got older, it was no big deal. This year, I was told that you should NOT use shaving because they will eat them and you will have digestive and clogged pooper issues and suggested a short cut straw product called "coop clean". After 2 weeks, my house was COVERED DAILY with dust. Stick with the shavings. Wish I did. Also, had 12 in a large tote and by 4 weeks they were restless and crowded. If you can find a warm safe outdoor place for them by then, I'd recommend it.
