heat source during the day

Just to clarify...I don't use a heatlamp, but checked "at night" because I do use a contained oil heater on nights below 20.

Insofar as I have a heat source it is the sun, thus yes it is on during the day, although come to think of it the ground is also a significant heat source for my coop and that is there 'round the clock. LOL

If you are trying to decide whether to keep electric heating on during the day, I would suggest it depends on what your daytime temperatures actually ARE.

I don't use a heat lamp with chickens that are fully feathered. Mine enjoy playing and foraging in single digit temperatures (Fahrenheit) as long as the wind is calm and the ground is not covered in snow. A dusting is fine as long as the ground is not totally covered like it is this morning.

I am not in your climate so my answer may be different than yours, but no, I do not use any artificial heat source.

So change number 2...lol...maybe you should add "for fully feathered birds." Because at this time of year, you'd get 100% yes for chicks (hopefully).

Has anyone ever tried one of those pop-can solar heaters for their coop? I thought it might be good during the day - even if it won't be constant... even in winter I get some sun so I'm thinking it would be a little bit of heat even if the power went out

I go by the temperature. Today we have what they call a "blue norther" blowing in, so the temperature this morning is going down sharply from what it was during the night. It's supposed to hit freezing by around 11 a.m., so I'll be out there turning on the oil filled radiator on in a hour or so. Drizzly rain will be turning to ice pellets. I'm very glad I completed the roofing of the run attached to my big coop earlier this week, although I expect my chickens will be sitting inside the coop all day anyway. They're no fools.

P.S. I forgot to mention: I have tiny, part Serama bantams. If I had standard sized hens, I wouldn't even think about adding supplemental heat for them here in North Texas. And the honest truth is even my tiny birds could probably manage just fine without the added heat. My chicken mentor who lives only a few blocks away from me keeps his bantam flock outdoors without supplemental heat and they're just fine...and I got my original chicks from him.

I realize the supplemental heat is really more for my own peace of mind than it is for the needs of our birds.

I use those red heat lamps that they say to use right have your chicks or ducklings hatch I keep mine all day and all night just the other day its was 25 degrees outside but 40 inside! But with sub zero temps tonight and for the weekend so we really need it up here in the north.
