Heat Tolerant Egg Layers??

Wha are isa browns?? Wish I could visit you. Would LOVE to go scuba diving over there!

My leghorns don't even notice the heat. They aren't even panting when the other chickens are laying around trying to stay cool.

I might also suggest NN/Turkens.

I've attended a local farmer's market for several years. When it gets really hot in the summer I would be one of the only people who still had eggs because my white leghorns never missed a beat! My vote is for Leghorn, but I think any of the Mediterranean breeds would be suited for high temps.

Thanks! Sounds like the leghorns are the most prolific layers, but will do a bit more research. Gotta build another pen anyways lol.

my ISA's lay decent in this hot weather. it get 95-100 here almost every day! they have slowed some, but my best layers in this heat have to be my SLW and RIR's, they lay consistently all week long, just skipping one day out of the week, sometimes none at all.

Come visit anytime we are a friendly bunch us Aussies lol. isa Browns are a hybrid breed that are known for their great laying. They are what are mostly used in the eggs sold in supermarkets over here. I belive they are a cross between RIR Rooster and a white leg horn hen.

Ahhhhhh ok. Do we have those inthe US? I mean, I know we could cross them ourself but would rather buythem that way.

I have several breeds, but I've been selling a lot of chicks from my FBCM and American Game cross. They do well in heat. Games are great layers and the hens are usually very mellow. With this mix they will lay a brown egg although not as dark as a Marans. While the Game eggs are usually just large my FBCMs lay a huge egg. Thats the first thing people tell me when I ship them. They've never seen them that big. The other reason I do this mix is for meat birds. I just can't eat a Marans roo, so I mix them. I hear Marans are very tasty, but these will do.

The thing about Leghorns is although maybe not aggressive (mine were) they tend to be flighty, but if you are looking for good layers, they lay like crazy.

Another breed you might like are Dominics. Although similar to Barred Rocks, I like them much better. Not as aggressive and lay like there's no tomorrow. I used to have one that would occassionally lay twice a day, only missed laying maybe once a month and if you need one they are also great broodies. Just don't touch their babies. LOL
