I have two chickens, (they are pets), and where I live, we can have -22 degrees F. I know that I need to get a heated waterer, but cant find one that I like. I don't know if one for a cat or dog would work, or if they would mess in it. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be GREAT! Thanks!

I use the heated bases with the galvanized metal waterers, and I have used the heated dog bowls. Either will work fine, as long as the dog dish isn't apt to be stepped in by a chicken. That would possibly lead to bad frostbite. I do like the heated base better than the plastic waterer with the integrated heated base, which is a pain to fill. Mary

Heated dog waterers work well. Just elevate them so the rim is around the height of the chickens' backs. I've used rubber feed pans with a bird bath heater in them. If both your birds are hens, that will work. Don't use them for roosters because they'll dip their wattles in the water to drink and they can get frostbitten. With roosters, I use heated founts or heated nipple systems.
