Heated Dog Bowl

I have one for the pen with only 4 chickens in it, and it works great.

You do want to elevate it good 'n' high, to minimize the am't of shavings getting kicked into it.

I had trouble with poop in it, last winter, til I rebuilt its platform to be only nominally wider than the bowl itself -- apparently one of the ISA Browns was perching on the platform next to the bowl and being incautious about which direction her butt was pointing

LynneP- Thanks for the idea of a catch bucket. I was unplugging the dish and taking outside to dump and clean. I'm a klutz and was this was a diaster in the making

A dish pan!! Do you hang it on a nail?? I was thinking of doing this to the bucket since one side is flat but the dish pan might work better.

I carry a regular old 3-gallon bucket into the run every morning that contains a large cat litter scoop and whisk broom. While the girls are eating breakfast, I do a 2-minute policing-up of the coop and run. When that bucket is about 1/4 full of shavings, straw, and yuck, I will sometimes turn the waterer into it to empty out any dirt, etc. that might have gotten into it. Then I just dump my bucket in the compost bin. It's a quick way to keep everything relatively clean.

I am going to be bringing the heated water bowl out to my girls this afternoon after my Christmas fudge trip and feeding/cleaning the boy up.

Another good kind of catch bucket is a used kitty litter bucket- the rectangular kind. It allows you to get a flat edge alongside the raised bowl. They are also good for scraping poops from roosts and platforms, you seldom miss!
