I have one for the pen with only 4 chickens in it, and it works great.
You do want to elevate it good 'n' high, to minimize the am't of shavings getting kicked into it.
I had trouble with poop in it, last winter, til I rebuilt its platform to be only nominally wider than the bowl itself -- apparently one of the ISA Browns was perching on the platform next to the bowl and being incautious about which direction her butt was pointing
