Spend the money for this set up and your problems are over!
I got the 2 gal. size at Tractor Supply with the heater on the bottom.

Have you had good luck with it? I've read (here) that the heater element doesn't last long on these.

we have baught 3 of those since we started poultry 5 years ago. they dont last us long. my dad baught me a heated waterer after he drilled a hole in my other waterer to try placing a bird bath heater in it....it didnt work. ya its a pain filling and the bottom will come off while your flipping it and waters everywhere and if you have my birds they like to knock it over...as soon as i flip it. i dont like it but theres not much else i can do

Glad you caught it before it did any major damage or caught fire. Just out of curiosity, what size extension cord did you have it plugged into?

Me too.

It was your standard 25', 14 gauge orange cord. Actually still use the cord in the barn for the shop vac.
That fount and a second one were disposed of.

i got one for Christmas but it hasn't been cold enough to use it

I got this waterer pictured in the original post this past summer.... when i plugged it in the first time this winter i found that it didn't work. frozen water! Not sure if it came broken or i did something to cause it to break but i cant imagine what i could have done wrong. It's not like i submerged the base in water!

We got one this year and it does the trick. Sure, there are things that could be improved but it gets the job done, has a large volume, built in thermostat, and a reasonable price.

Put it in the freezer over night -- just the red base.

I have 6 of these - I like them very much.

VF do you think they could be modified by cutting a small hose sized opening near the top. So that they could be filled in place? I have developed tendonitis in my hands and lifting it full has become impossible for me. Maybe plug it with a sink stopper?
